The shape of a day, in order, and reading a clock to o'clock and half past.
The science
Telling time joins sequencing, which children build through stories and routines, with reading numbers on a circular scale. Cairn Clock starts with the order of the day, moves to the language of time, then to reading a clock face at o'clock and half past, the standard first-grade milestones.
Understanding time develops gradually: sequencing and duration language come before reading a clock, and ordering daily events supports both (Friedman, 1986; 1990).
Reading an analog clock to the hour and half hour is a standard early-grades measurement objective and a concrete application of number and of a half.
Cairn Clock leans on the child's own routine first, then teaches the clock face, because time is easiest to learn when it is attached to a real day.

By age, and how to do it at home
Here is what is developing at each age, what Cairn Clock does about it, and a way to build the same skill at home. The home column is the real point: even if your child never opens the app, you can do this. The best early learning has always been a parent and a child and a little knowing-what-to-try.
Puts the events of a day in order and is learning to read a clock to the hour.
Order the day's pictures, learn o'clock and half past, and set the hands to match.
Narrate the clock: “it is 7 o'clock, that is bath time.” Let them move a real clock's hands.
