Hear a word, then build it from its sounds. Reading taught backwards, which makes reading stick.

The science

Spelling and reading are two sides of one skill. When a child stretches a spoken word into its sounds and writes a letter for each, they practise the exact letter-sound mapping that decoding relies on, in the other direction. Cairn Spell starts with the SATPIN sounds and builds words the child can already read.

Reading and spelling draw on the same knowledge of how letters map to sounds, so growth in one supports the other (Ehri, 2000; Treiman, 1998). Early invented spelling, where a child writes the sounds they hear, predicts later reading and spelling.

Segmenting a spoken word into its phonemes is the hardest and most predictive piece of phonological awareness, and writing a letter for each sound makes that segmenting concrete (National Reading Panel, 2000).

Cairn Spell keeps every target word inside the letters and patterns already taught, so spelling is reasoning from sounds rather than memorizing a string.

The home column is the real point: even if your child never opens the app, you can do this. The best early learning has always been a parent and a child and a little knowing-what-to-try.

Longer words, the first digraphs, and a gentle check that the spelling matches the sounds.

Play “stretch the word”: say a word slowly together and write each sound before reading it back.
