From letters to a real sentence: spaces, a capital at the start, a period at the end.
The science
Once letter formation is fairly automatic, the bottleneck for young writers is transcription: spelling and handwriting fluent enough to free the mind to compose. Cairn Write bridges from forming letters to composing a simple sentence, with the conventions that make it readable.
The Simple View of Writing frames early writing as transcription, handwriting and spelling, plus idea generation, coordinated by working memory. When transcription is effortful, composition collapses (Berninger & Amtmann, 2003).
Explicit teaching of sentence construction and conventions, capitalization, spacing, and end punctuation, supports beginning writers and is recommended in early-grades practice guides (Graham et al., 2012).
Cairn Write keeps spelling inside known patterns so a child can spend attention on the sentence itself, then checks the capital, the spaces, and the period.

By age, and how to do it at home
Here is what is developing at each age, what Cairn Write does about it, and a way to build the same skill at home. The home column is the real point: even if your child never opens the app, you can do this. The best early learning has always been a parent and a child and a little knowing-what-to-try.
Writes short decodable words from memory and is ready to string them into a sentence with help.
Build a simple sentence from words, then add the capital, the spaces, and the period.
Keep a tiny journal: one sentence a day about anything. Read it back together and make a fuss.
